The story follows the wanderings of a hero through the situations of survival. People wait for the Ark to arrive and rescue them while their habitat falls apart. Delving deep into the dusty and long abandonded vaults of b-cinema in search of lost gems always leaves me with a bittersweet taste. On one hand the discovery of unexpected gems where no one would think them possible is a rewarding experience. On the other hand though it makes one wonder how many of these remarkable low-budget oddities, personal love affairs of directors never quite famous and now all but forgotten, have almost forever slipped from memory? n any case what we have here is a little post-apocalyptic gem from Poland that is really better than it has any right to. The dystopian near future of O-BI, O-BA finds a group of survivors of the nuclear war that ravaged the Earth inhabiting an underworld concrete bunker and biding their time as they wait for the mysterious Ark, an air ship of some kind that will come and save them. The Ark proves to be an elaborate hoax, carefully designed to give hope to the malnourished and desperate denizens of the bunker, while in the meantime the dome that separates their miserable existence from the nuclear winter outside is slowly caving in. What first striked me about the movie is the design of the bunker and the depiction of the survivors. The survivors are gaunt, filthy and terrible-looking penitents, dressed in rags and aimlessly wandering the neon-lit halls of the bunker like automatons. The bunker is a rundown, seedy place, with bright neon lights peering from all sides like the eyes of malignant beasts. On one hand it is a slightly 80's depiction of the dystopian future but the movie never stoops down to MAD MAX cheese. Instead it combines biting political satire with the bleak outlook of a world with no future, black comedy with barbs on apathy, religion and power. The survivors, for example, are fed some kind of flour dropping from a tube that hovers in the air - later on we discover the food supervisor uses books and the Bible itself as filler for this meagre meal. There are many such short symbolic touches, perhaps not life-changing or faith-restoring, yet playful, clever and inspired. One thing is for sure; O-BI, O-BA is not your run-of-the-mill sci-fi schlock. It overcomes its modest budget with creativity and has genuine artistic aspirations both from a writing and directing perspective. My opinion is that it should have been filmed in black and white instead of colour though. The director uses atmospheric light and shadow to great effect and it would have registered even better in stark black and white. The blue-green neon on the other hand outstays its welcome after a while. Just a minor gripe in an otherwise solid b-movie with its heart set in all the right places. Imagine a less bleak THE ROAD (Cormac McCarthy) being injected with the satire and humour of DR.STRANGELOVE and you're getting there. See it if you can find it.

張光北,馬羚,周國賓,陳煒,劇雪北京某研究院的地下室里,住著一群尚無分房資格的大齡青年。朱一丹好不容易爭取到一間小屋——與推銷員羅大俠合住一個單元,成為青年中第一個即將“爬上地面”的幸運(yùn)兒。這天,他的女朋友尹瀾瀾和初有成、孫曉琪等伙伴設(shè)宴為他送行。席間,青年們從房管處的老曹口中獲悉,明天將要分配一批住房,但前提是必須持有結(jié)婚證。正當(dāng)大家為朱一丹和尹瀾瀾慶幸時,他們卻向眾人宣布決定分手。為了把朱一丹擠出去,羅大俠和妻子小楓在門廳里設(shè)置了許多“路障”;還用面糊堵住了朱一丹小屋的鎖眼,害得喬遷的朱一丹在門廳睡了一夜。青年們?yōu)榱朔值椒孔蛹娂娦袆悠饋?。尹瀾瀾也結(jié)交了新的男朋友——馬自達(dá)。誰知,馬自達(dá)一見到孫曉琪立刻轉(zhuǎn)了向,尹瀾瀾痛苦萬分。一天,小混混丁三趁大俠不在家,企圖調(diào)戲小楓,被朱一丹趕走,小楓對朱十分感激。一個偶然的機(jī)會,朱一丹與初有成的表妹晶晶相遇,二人一見鐘情。逛商店時,晶晶看中了一套時裝,朱一丹在付錢時才尷尬地發(fā)現(xiàn)自己看錯了價(jià)碼,囊中款項(xiàng)根本不夠。一天,小楓在洗澡時煤氣中毒,朱一丹把她抱出浴室做人工呼吸,恰被出差歸來的大俠撞見。大俠不問青紅皂白,對朱一丹大打出手,小楓一氣之下回了娘家。在朱一丹的勸導(dǎo)下,夫妻二人和好如初。晶晶進(jìn)了外企,并被派到南方任職。朱一丹買下那套時裝,趕到機(jī)場為她送行,卻意外地得到晶晶要與他分手的消息。但朱一丹并沒有被痛苦壓垮,很快振作了起來。為了能夠分到住房,照顧癱瘓的老父親,尹瀾瀾情急之下,竟決定嫁給年愈50的單身漢老曹。為了幫助尹瀾瀾,朱一丹決定跟她“假結(jié)婚”。洞房花燭之時,這一對新人舊情萌發(fā)假戲成真。
