影片設定在當下的柏林，女主角溫蒂妮是一名城市發(fā)展局的顧問。她的現(xiàn)任男友忽然提出分手，此時一個古老的詛咒似乎正要應驗。中世紀的傳說里，溫蒂妮是水中的精靈，倘若與她們結(jié)合的男人背叛了她們，她們就會殺死男人并回歸水中。電影的女主角想要抵抗這一詛咒，故而離開了柏林。此時她結(jié)識了克里斯多弗，一名在德國西部水庫區(qū)工作的工業(yè)潛水員。兩人相愛。不久后克里斯多弗察覺到，溫蒂妮似乎在逃離什么，感覺受到了背叛...

典型都市女性Diana（鄭裕玲 飾）有著驕人的事業(yè)成績，也積極經(jīng)營著自己的愛情。可是香港經(jīng)濟不景氣，她與同公司的小職員韋大漢（曾志偉 飾）都在了裁員的名單上。韋大漢早年妻子因為好賭離家出走，丟下了女兒千華（楊千嬅 飾）及小兒子萬華需要供養(yǎng)。他向兒女隱瞞自己已經(jīng)被解雇的事實，可是Diana的出現(xiàn)讓千華及弟弟都知道了爸爸的真實情況。原來Diana的出現(xiàn)是想跟他們參加一個家庭制的游戲，只有勝出游戲，電視臺便會原價收購他們的負資產(chǎn)業(yè)。Diana是一個自私冷酷的人，在游戲的過程中，被大漢付出在兒女身上的感情而改變了她。千華也在游戲中與導演（陳奕迅 飾）產(chǎn)生了感情。游戲最終由他們勝出，可是千華親生母親的出現(xiàn)使局面徹底改變了……
