Ay?e, Ali, Mehmet and Zeynep are middle-class millennials struggling to make ends meet in Istanbul. Either still living with their parents or hardly getting by without help from their families, they are all beset by similar woes: money crunch, joblessness, social isolation. In view of the world’s horrors that Zeynep enumerates in her diary entries, these are minor problems, ‘slight disasters’, but they are all-consuming, at least to the extent of making them cry in the still of the night. However, Umut Subasi’s first feature, Almost Entirely a Slight Disaster, is not a melodrama. With an appealingly light touch, it diagnoses the malaise of a generation that has run up against a dead end, one whose future prospects are indistinguishable from a game of chance. This is a world where astrology, the lottery and online personality tests compete with visa and job applications as life-shaping elements. Fittingly, the film is structured around chance and coincidence, with its handful of characters encountering each other in every permutation, as though there were no world outside this small social bubble. 1990年代，上海。歌劇演員顏蔚（秦怡 飾）禍不單行，丈夫剛剛去世，如今女兒夏櫻（劉赫男 飾）又患了精神分裂癥住院，此時歌劇院領導通知她去廈門開會，她自感分身無術。夏櫻的病情時好時壞，令顏蔚心急如焚。醫院沙院長（劉瓊 飾）告訴顏蔚，精神病人發病時自己并不覺痛苦，相反，痛苦的是家屬。新來的小病友吹奏的囗琴曲《世上只有媽媽好》在患者中引起共鳴，不少病人臉上的表情不再木然，還有人流下淚水。顏蔚將逐漸好轉的女兒接回家中康復治療，并帶她游覽了日益發展的上海城區。清明時節，在給亡夫掃墓時，顏蔚遇見了為妻子上墳的沙院長......
