1964年，法國駐華大使館會計高仁尼（杰瑞米·艾恩斯）在觀看歌劇時，被舞臺上的蝴蝶夫人迷住了。戲畢，他主動向蝴蝶夫人的扮演者、京劇演員宋麗玲示好。一次次的接觸，使兩顆孤獨的心相愛了。然而好景不長，文化大革命爆發，宋麗玲音信全無。1968年，宋麗玲來到法國，與高仁尼重聚。多年后，當高仁尼因間諜身份被指控時，站在證人席上的，是西裝革履的宋麗玲。指男為女的高仁尼成為了全法國的笑柄。這兩個男人將如何面對對方，如何面對他們的愛情
